Organizational Structure

UA HR - A Functional Organization

The University of Alaska Human Resources organization was created with four main functional areas instead of separate HR Offices for each campus and the system office. Each area is led by knowledgeable directors with quality support teams in place and each director reports  to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) regardless of their location. This leads to standard operating policy and procedures and ensures consistent accountability. In turn, greater productivity occurs and excellent customer service is provided. The UA HR functional areas are Operations, Talent Acquisition, Transition & Benefits,  and Labor & Employee Engagement. Learn more about their services by clicking through on the area name.

Getting Help From Your UA Support Team

HR Coordinators and Online Self-Service:

Many departments have HR Coordinators (AKA PPAs, or Cost Center Clerks).  These are key people in departments who have a great deal of knowledge and resources available to answer HR-related questions, solve problems, and complete routine actions.   We encourage employees to first seek help from their local HR Coordinators as they will have the information most applicable to their areas. Check the spreadsheet to find your HR Coordinator.

Online self-service is another fast and easy route for routine transactional matters and basic questions. Employees and HR Coordinators have an extensive menu of online tools and applications for self-service at their disposal on the HR Website.  There are forms and instructions for dozens of common service needs that can be filled out and submitted electronically.

Customer Service through HR Generalist Support:

If HR Coordinators and self-service options are unavailable or unable to satisfy inquiries or provide basic services, the next option for support comes from HR Generalists.  HR Generalists are the front lines of support. They work at the HR centers on each main university campus. Each department has a generalist assigned to them.  HR Generalists provide services, answer questions, and solve common problems across all HR functional areas.  In most cases, they will own a person’s or department’s issue from start to finish.

To support the needs of employees throughout the University of Alaska, the HR Customer Service and HR Generalist Support team can assist employees through the following channels:

Business Partners:

The University of Alaska Business Partners (BP's) at each MAU or Major Academic Unit (specifically, UAA, UAF, UAS & System Office), partner with the chancellor and leadership to understand strategy and objectives to help drive a high-performance culture. Each works directly with the Chief Human Resources Officer which makes them a trusted colleague by both university administration and within the core HR team. A SBP has the ability to quickly prioritize requests received from their respective campus and can facilitate the connection between university administrators and HR colleagues.
