UA reaches agreement on staff employee union eligibility with ALRA and CAUSE
January 9, 2026
The latest: Just before the winter break, UA reached an agreement with the ALRA and CAUSE on which employees are eligible to join the proposed staff union.
Why It Matters: The agreement is a key step in the process. Final details - including when and how an election would take place and confirming the final roster of eligible employees - are still being worked on.
- UA conducted all of the eligibility negotiations with the ALRA and CAUSE in good faith, and will continue to as things progress. We’ll also continue to maintain open communication and inclusive decision-making across the system.
- We sincerely appreciate the many staff members who completed the ALRA questionnaires. We know this was a time-consuming task, and we are grateful for your work to inform the process.

What’s Next: There’s no date for an election yet. UA will continue to work with the ALRA and CAUSE on election timelines and will share that information directly with eligible employees.
- Keep in mind: As staff continue to follow this process, it is helpful to remember that a union cannot promise specific outcomes. It can negotiate, but any final agreement must still be approved by UA leadership.
- It is also important to note that if an election is scheduled, only those who vote will determine the outcome. Staff should watch for future updates about when and how to cast your vote should that step occur.
The bottom line: UA is committed to protecting the institution’s long-term strength. University leadership will continue to make decisions that reflect both our financial realities and our mission to serve Alaska.
Learn more: UA is committed to ensuring this process is fair, thorough and informed.
