Regents Approve University Union Contract

March 13, 2001  NR 04-01

The University of Alaska announces the ratification and approval of a collective bargaining agreement with the Alaska Higher Education Crafts and Trades Employees Local 6070, APEA/AFT/AFL-CIO. On Friday, March 9, the Board of Regents unanimously approved the contract after union members had ratified the three-year deal.

The new contract provides across the board raises of 1.5%, 1% and 1% over three years, and continues step increases. Benefits for probationary employees are adjusted in the second year of the agreement. The agreement also maintains and clarifies employee contributions to the cost of health benefits and streamlines the grievance process. The agreement will go into effect immediately and will run through December 31, 2003. Salary increases are subject to funding by the legislature.

"The negotiation process was constructive," said Michael Hostina, the university's director of labor relations. "Union leadership recognized the need for accountability and productivity and the administration responded to legitimate employee concerns. The agreement is responsible and will serve well the needs of both parties over the next three years."
