Coronavirus update: do not travel to China

On February 2, the U.S. Department of State- Bureau of Consular Affairs and the Centers for Disease Control issued a level-four do not travel advisory to China, because of the coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China.

UA Board of Regents approves tuition increase, sets aside $1.5 million for student financial aid

The University of Alaska Board of Regents voted to increase the amount undergraduate students pay for college tuition by 5 percent beginning in fall semester 2020, but directed the administration to invest $1.5 million of tuition revenue to financial aid for students at each university. The UA tuition rate remains well below the tuition rates at most universities in the west.

UAS Marine Biology Bachelor's listed #5 in College Values Online Top 20 National Ranking

College Values Online has ranked the University of Alaska Southeast as one of the best values for a bachelor's in marine biology degree program. The ranking takes into account affordability, accreditation, and rankings in major publications like U.S. News and World Report. College Values Online references compensation research organization PayScale, which lists the median wage for marine biologists at $51,538 per year. By attaining a marine biology degree, students are prepared for entry-level positions in marine science fields as well as continued studies at the graduate level.

Board of Regents resolution renames KPC anthropology lab to honor the late Dr. Alan Boraas legacy

The University of Alaska Board of Regents unanimously passed a resolution honoring the late Dr. Alan Boraas's life and legacy during its full board meeting on Jan. 16 in Anchorage. The resolution also recognizes the renaming of the Kenai Peninsula College Anthropology Lab the Alan 'Tiqutsex' Boraas Anthropology Lab as a tribute to his legacy of teaching, research and service.

Applications open for remote energy academy

UAF's Arctic Remote Energy Networks Academy is a unique circumpolar knowledge-sharing program focusing on isolated power systems integration. Applications for the 2020 academy are due Feb. 15. Participants will travel to Nunavut, Canada; Alaska; and Iceland this summer.

UA President to meet with Alaska's congressional leaders about UA federal priorities

The University of Alaska Board of Regents will convene Jan. 16-17 in Anchorage to discuss the university's budget, consider a 5 percent tuition increase and hear about the enrollment strategies planned by each university. The board originally was scheduled to vote on the tuition increase during its November 2019 meeting, but delayed the decision pending further engagement by campus leaders with their students.
