SB 151 - Pre-K/Elementy ED Programs/Funding; Reading

"An Act relating to early education programs provided by school districts; relating to funding for early education programs; relating to a department literacy program; relating to a comprehensive reading policy; relating to the duties of the state Board of Education and Early Development; and providing for an effective date."

The “Alaska Reads Act” creates a comprehensive statewide K-3 reading policy, including teacher training on literacy instruction, with the goal of improving reading outcomes. The bills have been referred to the Education and Finance Committees.

HB 156 - Group Insurance for School District, Local Government, and University Employees

HB 180 – Add faculty member Univ. Board of Regents

Expands the university Board of Regents to include one full-time tenured faculty member. The bill has been referred to the Education and Finance Committees.

HB 188 – Education Tax Credit: Employer Child Care Cost

"An Act relating to education tax credits for certain payments and contributions for child care and child care facilities; and providing for an effective date." 

Would expand the Alaska Education Tax Credit to include contributions employers make towards child care and child care facilities. The bill has been referred to the Education and Finance Committees.

HB 193 – Second verse of Alaska's Flag Song

Adds a second verse to “Alaska’s Flag” the official state song. The song’s copyright is owned by the University of Alaska Foundation. The bill has been referred to the Education and Finance Committees.

HB 195 – Add faculty member Univ. Board of Regents

Expands the university Board of Regents to include one full-time tenured faculty member. The bill has been referred to the Education and Finance Committees.

HB 196 - Alaskan Performance Scholarship amount
Rep. Zack Fields
"An Act relating to the maximum annual awards for Alaska performance scholarships."

Increases the maximum award for top-tier Alaskan Performance Scholarships to the average cost of annual resident tuition,  which is estimated to be $7,740 for academic year 2021. The bill has been referred to the Education and Finance Committees.

HB 208 - Renaming College Rd. as Alan Boraas Rd.

"An Act renaming College Road in Soldotna as Alan Boraas Road."

Renames College Road in Soldotna as Alan Boraas Road. Dr. Boraas was a professor of anthropology at Kenai Peninsula College who passed away in November. The bill was referred to the Transportation Committee.

HB 235 - Alaska Workforce Investment Board allocations (TVEP reauthorization)
"An Act relating to allocations of funding for the Alaska Workforce Investment Board"

Bill would reauthorize the Technical Vocational Education Program (TVEP). This is important legislation as UA is the primary recipient of workforce training funding through the program.
