Student Cohort
For University of Alaska undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline, enrolled for the full academic year.
- A year on an interdisciplinary Arctic Challenge Project team, working with Early Career Faculty Fellows and President's Arctic Professors on a question a partner organization has asked
- A fall leadership retreat in Fairbanks and a spring retreat in Anchorage at Arctic Encounter, where teams present their work (travel covered)
- The course Arctic Leadership: Theory and Praxis (PS/ACNS F416/F616), with a UA Foundation scholarship covering the cost of the course
- A $1,000 stipend on completing the program
Early Career Faculty Fellows
For postdoctoral and early-career researchers who hold a PhD and have a UA faculty mentor. The mentor's letter must be co-signed by the dean or institute director.
- $80,000 a year for up to two years, managed with the host department or institute
- About a quarter of the Fellow's time goes to ALI: mentoring cohort students, co-leading a Challenge Project team, and the two annual retreats. The rest goes to the Fellow's own Arctic research.
Arctic Engagement Awards
For UA faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students.
- Funding for projects that expand UA's Arctic engagement and visibility: research and fieldwork, new courses, student engagement, public engagement, and partnerships
- Up to $20,000 per project in the 2026 cycle, with four to six projects funded
Ambassador Travel + Residency Awards
For UA students, staff, faculty, and researchers.
- Awards of $1,000 to $5,000, and up to $10,000 for exceptional residencies or invitations, to represent UA at Arctic conferences, residencies, exchanges, and visiting appointments
- Recipients share a brief reflection, presentation, or report after they return
To apply, send a one- to two-page proposal, a CV or résumé, a letter of support from your UA supervisor, an invitation from the host organization (when there is one), a budget, and a proposed itinerary to ua-ali-info@alaska.edu.
