Shaping Alaska's Future

Introducing Beatrice Franklin

My name is Beatrice Franklin, and I have lived in Juneau since 1973. I have been on the Egan Library Staff at UAS since July 1996. My primary responsibilities are coordinating interlibrary loan and reference materials.

I am a native of Washington D.C. with a Master's of Education (M. Ed.) having worked mainly in libraries, vocational rehabilitation counseling and visitor information services. I enjoy playing tennis, reading, traveling, knitting and the outdoors.

For the past five years I’ve been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) classes as a volunteer on campus. UAS has a partnership with the Southeast Alaska Regional Resource Center’s Basic Adult Education Program, which refers students.

Future
Well, retirement is probably not too far off. However, I enjoy my work and co-workers, the library environment, the opportunities to participate in campus life and the good things that are happening here, so I’m not leaving just yet. No matter what, I plan to continue helping people with their English. That motivation probably comes from having had immigrant parents who gave me French as my first language.

Shaping?
The theme that I can mostly closely identify with is “Student Achievement and Attainment." I feel that the library and information literacy are pretty key to student success. Our library is constantly evaluating how students can better be served, which encompasses the resources provided as well as the quality of student interactions.

As a small campus, UAS can deliver a more personal and caring college experience, and I feel it really does that. I’m especially appreciative of the growing Alaska Native languages and culture program, the research opportunities for undergraduate science students, the literature/arts journal and the academic exchange program...all of which contribute significantly to the unique character of UAS.
