People of UA 2014

Introducing Sheila Mann

I was born and raised in Alaska and live in Valdez with my husband and three boys. I am a graduate of Prince William Sound Community College with my Associate of Arts degree and completed a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree through UAS this spring. I have worked in the university system for just over four years. I take pride in the mission of the university and love the people I work with.

Currently, I am the administrative specialist for the Instruction Department at PWSCC. I work closely with faculty, advisors, and the administration to ensure we are offering classes that will enable our students to graduate on time. I also handle many small tasks to make the academic side of the house run smoothly. For example, I coordinate room assignment for classes, ensure IT set-up and make sure all necessary textbooks are available. We work hard to assess our courses and programs to ensure we are providing quality education to our students. Coordination and communication between faculty, adjunct faculty and student support staff is key to making sure we are accessible, efficient and transparent.

Shaping

I believe the work I do directly ties in with Shaping Alaska’s Future Theme 1: Student Achievement and Attainment. Cooperation between my office, faculty, advisors and administrators to help students graduate on time directly works to remedy Issue A of Theme 1 – UA students on average take longer to complete degrees than students at peer institutions. My work in the Instruction Department also addresses Issue B – Like those of many large and complex institutions, UA processes and procedures can be challenging for students to navigate. From behind the scenes, I try to make a student’s educational experience as easy to navigate as possible and aim for quality instructors, courses and programs. Together we work on improving our standards and being as innovative as possible to engage students and help them be successful in their futures.
