Institute of Arctic Biology Interim Director Diane O'Brien elected to the National Academy of Sciences

May 3, 2024

On April 30, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced 120 new members to their ranks. This prestigious selection included longtime UAF Professor and Interim Director of UAF's Institute of Arctic Biology Diane O'Brien. The University of Alaska is proud to congratulate O'Brien on this momentous achievement.

Members are elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Membership is a widely accepted mark of excellence in science and is considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive. Current NAS membership totals approximately 2,400 members and 500 international members, of which approximately 190 have received Nobel prizes.

On X, the NAS announcement reads, "We are thrilled to announce the election of 120 members and 24 international members to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continued achievements in original research. Congratulations to our new #NASmembers and welcome to the Academy!"
