May 1, 2023

Kara Axx will be appointed the next Chief Procurement Officer for the University of Alaska on June 1, 2023. Kara has served in multiple roles during her 21 year career with the university. In every role, she has shown a commitment to leadership, customer service, and process improvement.

Kara was a member of UA’s first Procurement Technician training program in 2013 and now, a decade later, serves as the program’s instructor. Ms. Axx is well versed in UA policy and has assisted with various updates to the construction procurement policies and procedures. She possesses strong knowledge of State of Alaska procurement statute, Board of Regents procurement policy, and a strong working knowledge of federal procurement policy. Kara has relevant supervisory experience managing UAF Central Receiving and Property as well as in her current role of Associate Director of Procurement and Contract Services. Kara holds certifications as a NIGP Certified Procurement Professional and Certified Public Procurement Officer (CPPO) with the Universal Public Procurement Certification Council.

The Chief Procurement Officer will have system-wide procurement responsibilities, including oversight of construction contracting, as well as supervision of the Procurement & Contract Services staff. Kara will be taking over for John Hebard who is retiring from the role on May 31, 2023. Mr. Hebard provided outstanding service to the university for the past 27 years.

Please join me in welcoming Kara Axx to the role of CPO and in thanking John for his many years of service to the university.
