Tuition Transparency - Improving the Student Experience

UA is making changes to simplify the cost of attendance for students. Changes will take effect for  Academic Year 27-28 (Fall 2027). In September and November, the Board of Regents will consider shifting to a “program-based tuition model”, which will allow students to know their cost of attendance based on the degree or certificate they want to obtain.

What is changing

Today, courses have different rates based on the campus and the course level. In addition, some courses require a separate surcharge on top of tuition which appears on your bill under a different name. This can change what you pay from one year to the next as you move deeper into your major.

Starting Fall 2027, we are replacing complex course-by-course pricing and separate tuition surcharges with one single, upfront tuition rate tied to your major.

Why now

You can see the real price sooner.
Your cost is tied to your major and published, so you can compare programs and campuses before you commit.
Your cost is more predictable.
No jump between your sophomore and junior year when you move into upper-division courses in your major.
More of your cost is scholarship-eligible.
Money that used to sit outside tuition as a separate fee now counts as tuition, which means scholarships, waivers, and reimbursements can apply to it.

 

What is not changing

  • How much you pay for the 2026–27 academic year. Nothing on this page affects a bill you are paying now.
  • Course fees for specific costs tied to classes (materials, lab supplies, flight time, equipment) still exist and still appear on your bill.
  • Your financial aid eligibility or the aid programs you already use.

How your rate is built

Your tuition rate depends on three things:

Your university
UAA, UAF, or UAS — your home university sets your rate.
Your level
Whether you're getting your associate/certificate, bachelor's degree, or a graduate degree.
Your major
Most majors share the same rate. A few areas of study cost the universities more to deliver, so those have their own rate — published, so you can see it before you apply.

 

Words you might see

Course fee
A charge for a specific cost in a specific class, like lab materials or aviation fuel. These still exist.
Home university
If you take classes at more than one UA university, your home university is the one you were admitted to, and its rate applies.
Non-degree seeking (or just taking a class)
If you are not working toward a degree or certificate, or are just taking a class, the cost for your courses aligns directly with our standard tuition cost.
Program-based tuition
The name for this new structure. "Program" means your area of study — what you probably call your major.

Find your rate

Proposed tuition rates for Fall 2027 as of August 28, 2026. Proposed rates are presented to the Board of Regents in September, distributed across the system for review and feedback in September and October, and considered for final approval by the Board at their November meeting.
  • If you are an undergraduate student taking a graduate course, the rate will be the Graduate, All Other Programs rate for that course.
  • If you are a graduate student taking an undergraduate course, the rate will be the Bachelor's, All Other Programs rate for UAA/UAF and the Undergraduate, All Other Programs rate for UAS for that course.

Current and Prospective Students & Families

No. Nothing on this page affects what you pay for the 2026-27 academic year. The new structure starts Fall 2027.

For most students, no. Most students will pay the same total amount for the degree, with the benefit of paying the same amount across all four years rather than higher amounts in later years. This simplifies tuition so everyone can determine the cost more easily.

Rates go to the Board of Regents in September for a first look and are decided in November 2026. We will publish the final rates on this page the week after the November vote.

Some areas of study cost more to deliver: specialized equipment, smaller class sizes, licensed instructors, aircraft, etc. Today, that shows up as a separate surcharge added to your bill. Under the new structure, it is included in the tuition rate for that major, which is published in advance.

Your rate follows your major. If you switch into or out of a major with its own rate, your tuition changes at the start of the next semester or term. You won’t see changes in the middle of a semester or term. 

There is a rate for you too, and it is published like every other rate. You do not need to declare a major or figure out which program you belong to.

It should help. Charges that used to sit outside tuition now count as tuition, and that means scholarships, waivers, and reimbursements can apply to a greater portion of your bill. Your eligibility rules do not change.

Your home university's rate. Your home university is the one you are admitted to, and its rate applies to the classes you take anywhere in the UA system, whichever campus is teaching them.

The exceptions: if you are a graduate student taking an undergraduate course, that course is billed at the undergraduate rate for your admitted campus. If you’re an undergraduate student taking a graduate-level course, that course is billed at the graduate rate for your admitted campus.

Your graduate rate is tied to your program and published in advance, the same as undergraduate rates. If you take an undergraduate course, for example a recreation, music, or wellness course outside your program, you pay the undergraduate rate for your admitted campus, not your graduate program rate.

Yes. Now, tuition is based on your program even if you take classes at a community campus.
