A holiday message from UA president Pat Pitney
December 19, 2025
Dear UA Community,
While the holiday season represents different traditions for each of us, for all of us, it’s a time to celebrate traditions, gather with friends and loved ones, and express gratitude.
As I’ve been preparing for my retirement next May, I’ve also been reflecting on my gratitude for our university system and the community of people who are a part of it. This year has had its highlights and challenges, but I’m very grateful for all of you and the resilience you’ve shown as we’ve navigated a shifting environment for post-secondary education.
To our faculty: thank you for providing high-quality education across so many disciplines and learning environments across this great state.
To our researchers: thank you for helping us better understand our world, and finding solutions to the challenges facing Alaska.
To our student advisors and student services staff: thank you for supporting our students through their education journey and helping them navigate challenges both in and out of the classroom.
To our administrative staff: thank you for keeping our operations running smoothly.
To our facilities and maintenance crews: thank you for braving the elements and creating a warm and welcoming learning and working environment.
To our students: thank you for your commitment to learning and developing the skills to empower Alaska long into the future.
And last but not least, to our alumni and donors: thank you for your support and confidence in Alaska’s university system, and for sharing it with others.
Whatever your affiliation with the university system, thank you for taking part in supporting UA and our work to empower Alaska. Together, we are helping to create a thriving future for our state, and the amazing place we call home.
I wish you a happy, healthy and relaxing winter break, and look forward to seeing you in 2026.
Pat Pitney
President
