Did you know UAF just released a feature documentary celebrating 100 years of Nanooks hockey?
September 30, 2025
“In the Trenches: 100 Years of Alaska Hockey” takes a close look at the long-running UAF–UAA rivalry while reflecting on the resilience and tradition that have shaped the sport in the Far North.
How it started
The project began with alumni Paul Burke and Shawn Jones, members of UAF’s first NCAA
hockey team in 1980. The two conducted dozens of interviews with former players. Their
work was developed into a feature-length documentary by the University Relations department
with former creative director Adam Rubin and digital media producer Isabella Colello
at the helm.
What’s in the film
The documentary features interviews with current players, coaches, alumni and NHL
athletes. It reflects on the challenges of building and sustaining a hockey program
in Alaska, and the culture that’s developed around it.
Premiere event
The film premiered last week at the Patty Center, followed by a Q&A with Nanook coaches.
The Blue-Gold scrimmage took place later that evening at the Patty Ice Arena, offering
fans a first look at the 2025-26 roster. The season also begins October 3-4 under new head coach Matt Curley.
