People of UA 2014

Random Person #10

I can be found at the front desk of the School of Nursing at UAA, Anchorage. Having worked at UAA since 2001 I’ve found great joy in being able to help and encourage students. The faculty and staff are passionate about seeing students succeed in the nursing program here.

I believe that students notice and appreciate when you look at them as a whole person. The stresses of higher education at times can be pretty intense and is a balance for students to learn - they still have their life to take care of outside the classroom. UAA has a mix of different students. They may have a spouse and/or children, work full or part time jobs or be taking care of an ailing family member. None of the students I’ve encountered have anything near a cookie cutter life. So, when interacting with students, I put myself in their situation and try to imagine what I can do to make their day a little less stressful.

Some of the ways I can help personalize and de-stress the experience for students are to connect them with their advisor, smile and be glad to see them, give them accurate information and referrals, ask about their family or job, or maybe just greet them and call them by name.

My position is probably best reflected through Shaping Alaska’s Future in
Theme1: Student Achievement and Attainment
Issue B:  Like those of many large and complex institutions, UA processes and procedures can be challenging for students to navigate.

As the first point of contact for students inquiring about the nursing programs offered here, my job is to help students experience UAA as accessible, efficient and transparent in our core areas. Just as UAA aims to graduate students of excellence, our front office environment should be an example of that accessibility, efficiency and excellence. My hope is that students see that lived out as much as possible in their UAA experience.

Outside of work, I enjoy music, rubberstamping, family, friends and hospitality.  I have 5 elementary age Grandchildren that are a highlight of life, along with my supportive husband and daughter.
