Statewide Employee Updates

Since this is the first edition of the Statewide Voice released since October 2007 there are too many new employees and changes to track. The following announcements are from spring 2008 to the present. If you are a new employee and are not listed here please contact Monique Musick�to be included in the next edition. Thank you!

Nevada R. Bovee

Marketing Manager
UA College Savings Plan and Scholars Program

Started�May 5, 2008

Nevada Bovee coordinates and manages marketing and public relations activities surrounding programs, and participates with other UA teams to support early outreach efforts.

Bovee�served as Vice President of Marketing for Spirit of Alaska Federal Credit Union for 10 years. She is an active member and past president of UAF Alumni Fairbanks Chapter and a past chair of Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. She also was past President of UAF Associated Students of Business.�She currently serves on the Policy Committee for Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.

She was born in Bend, Oregon and grew up all around the western United States as her father moved around a lot for employment opportunities. She moved to Alaska in 1970 with her family for pipeline construction work. She attended Lathrop High School and graduated from Fairbanks Alternative High School in 1975. Her college education began as a Transfer student at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass, Oregon. She transferred to UAF and graduated in 1996 Magnum Cum Laude with BA in Business Administration with Marketing emphasis.

In addition, she currently holds Master Practitioner Certification in Neurolinguistic Programming and Hypnotherapy as well as Associate Trainer Certification for Neurolinguistic Programming. She is a certified Facilitator for DiSC (A model of understanding human behavior, motivation, and interpersonal communication).

She is married to Jeff Bovee and is about to celebrate their 11th anniversary. She has two daughters, Terin and Julianne Walton-Rantz and two stepsons, Matthew and Dustin Bovee, and daughter-in-law April Bovee, married to Matthew. Jeff and Nevada live with Wizard, their 20 year old Scarlet Macaw. Jeff raised him as a hatchling and he can be very entertaining when he is not being naughty. Terin is also a graduate of UAF and�Bovee’s older brother also attended UAF

Bovee�enjoys learning, spending time with friends, traveling, scuba diving, reading, movies, flowers, wine tasting and many other things. She is learning to play the piano and as a 2 year student is actually learning to play songs with both hands. She is also learning to crochet and hopes to make some fun things. She enjoys studying and practicing hypnotherapy and wants to help others make positive changes in their lives.

Tara Curran

Student Assistant
Vice President of Academic Affairs

Tara Curran's office duties include agenda preparation for committee, board, and other meetings, assisting book manuscript editing, providing assistance to visitors and callers, correspondence, and general office procedures.

Before working with the Vice President, Curran�was employed at the UA Press dealing with customer services, packing orders, SSL, organizing the warehouse and dealing with invoice issues.

She was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand and moved to the U.S. at the age of 13. She’s lived in Texas, Oregon and Alaska. She is in her fourth year at UAF majoring in Business Administration with concentration in Management and Organization. She will be graduating in December of 2008.�Curran�can speak Thai and English fluently and a little bit of Spanish.

Her father Mark Curran is an English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) teacher in Delta Junction. Her mother Laddawan Curran is an accountant for the Family Medical Center in Delta Junction. She has two brothers. Sivaman (the oldest), is a sushi chef down in Bellevue, WA. �He just moved from Thailand four years ago. Her brother, Danmanit just moved down to Bellevue to start a new job.

Curran�loves traveling and would like to see more of the world after graduating from UAF. She enjoys going to the gym, especially in the winter when it is dark 6 months out of the year. It keeps her going until completing her degree. She loves getting to know and meeting new people and learning new things that life has to offer.�

Dell Gunter

Claims Technician
UA System Office of Risk Services

As a claims technician, Dell Gunter provides administrative support for the claims division and is often the first point of contact for claim reporting. Gunter is a general claims information resource for campuses and other University customers, and is responsible for accurate and timely claims processing and data analysis.

Gunter formerly worked a licensed P&C Agent for McVitty Insurance Agency.

She grew up in Tennessee and moved to Anchorage in 1991 and has been there since. She obtained her P&C license in 2003 and will be attending UA to obtain more knowledge to apply towards her position at S.O.R.S.

Gunter is a single mother of three boys. Christopher, the eldest, is in the Navy for Nuclear Engineering. Connor attends West High School and the youngest, Cole, attends Lake Hood Elementary.

Dell Gunter loves to spend time with her family. When she gets the chance she enjoys a good book. She is teaching herself to knit and is interested in wine tasting and learning about wines. She enjoys going for walks and hiking in our beautiful state.

Monique Musick

Publications Specialist
Office of Public Affairs

Started July 28, 2008

Combining skills as a photographer and graphic designer Monique Musick will be producing publications for the UA Public Affairs office as well as other departments at statewide.�

As a UAF student�Musick�worked as a digital technician for the Rasmuson library archives and as the manager of the Wood Center darkroom and photography department. This is her first staff position at the university. �

She was born and raised in Ester, Alaska. After graduating from Lathrop High School, she took a year off as a rotary exchange student in Sweden. Back in Alaska, she pursued a photojournalism degree from UAF. In 2001, just months after receiving a BA in journalism she was hired by Mushing Magazine as production manager. In addition to designing magazines, advertising, marketing, and media kits she photographed races and wrote articles for the publication. When the magazine sold to a new publisher she opened PhotoSynthesis, her own photography and graphic design business, in the former Mushing building. �She still operates the business part time, doing portraiture, custom printing, weddings, graphic design and web development. In addition to being a service outlet, PhotoSynthesis operates as a photo gallery featuring local photographers in monthly exhibitions.�You can take a virtual visit at www.photosynthesisak.com �

Musick�lives near Ester with her long-time boyfriend Jeremy Harrod and her husky Sol. Her family lives in the area including her parents, Mike and Ritchie Musick, sister Michelle Renfrew and her husband Bill, brother Richard Musick and his wife Felicia. She is the proud aunt of Billy and Carson Renfrew, and Connor and Taylor Musick.

When not taking photographs�Musick�enjoys hiking, working at her mining claims, fossil and rock hounding, and in the winter enjoys snowmachining, skiing, and snowboarding.�

Dory Straight

Scholarship Officer
UA Foundation

Dory Straight is responsible for administering the UA scholarships and awards program, along with increasing private support for existing UA scholarships.

Straight formerly was Prospect Manager at Washington State University for the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and WSU Extension.

Straight was a "military brat" that settled in West Virginia when her father retired from the US Army. She married her high school sweetheart and traveled the world with him during his 22 years in the US Army.� She attended school in Killeen, TX at Central Texas College and Washington State University. At UAF Straigt is working for degrees in Business Administration and Marketing.

She has been married for 26 years to Ray Straight. They have three daughters, Amanda Straight, living in Fairbanks, Melissa Maddox, in Jackonsville, NC and Elizabeth Sims, in Ft. Bragg, NC. Their grandchildren are Vincent and Xavier Jacoby, and soon to come, little Maddox who is due Jan 4, 2009.

Straight enjoys fishing with her husband, spending time with her grandsons, talking with her daughters, gardening, crocheting and reading.
