Barbara Bolson was appointed Director of Kodiak College in April, 2007, after having served as Assistant Director and Interim Director of the college.  Her appointment follows a 21- year career as a successful teacher and administrator at elementary and secondary levels in  public Pre-K-12 school systems in Washington and Alaska. 

Bolson received a triple major BA degree in Elementary Education, History and English,  and a MEd in Educational Administration, from Seattle University, and holds Continuing Teaching certificates at both Elementary and Secondary levels along with  P-12 Principal Certification.  In 2003 she earned a Superintendent’s Credential upon completion of Washington State University’s three year field-based graduate level program. She is currently enrolled in the University of Wisconsin, Madison Distance Education Certification Program. Her unique experience--secondary teaching and administrative experience along with current duties as Director of Kodiak College --position Bolson effectively to engage in critical “bridge” conversations between Higher Ed and K-12 practitioners to create a seamless transition for learners as they move from high school to college. 

Barbara is passionate about the community campus mission, particularly as it relates to building student confidence, skills and college readiness. She is known as a strong supporter of faculty and students, maintaining close ties to both through ongoing interest and involvement in innovative methods of curriculum delivery, assessment of learning, retention strategies, student outreach and support. 

An experienced grant writer, and trained mediator, Bolson also serves on the UA Strategic Enrollment Group, and chairs the Advisory Board for the UAA’s Alaska Educational Innovations Network.  Professional organizations to which she belongs include the American Association of Community Colleges,  The Association of Supervision, Curriculum and Development, the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development, and Rotary International. She was honored her first year at UAA with a nomination for a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in honor of exceptional service to students.
