legal booksThe General Counsel serves as the chief legal officer of the Board of Regents, the Statewide Administration and the campuses throughout the university system.

General Counsel supervises and administers the legal affairs of the Board of Regents and university, appoints attorneys to represent the university, and directs university participation in administrative agency and judicial proceedings. The office also provides advice to university representatives on the full spectrum of legal issues, and trains employee groups on such specific topics as:

  1. student and faculty rights and responsibilities
  2. privacy in computing resources
  3. discrimination and sexual harassment
  4. Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act
  5. public records requests
  6. strategies for avoiding legal controversies

The General Counsel's office emphasizes reduction of litigation through:

  1. adherence to internal and external rules
  2. fair treatment of involved parties
  3. early participation in matters that might result in legal disputes
  4. objective evaluation of claims for payment or settlement
  5. successful defense of claims that lack merit
