Benjamin Shire comes to UAA with rich experience, most recently at the State of Alaska, Office of Information Technology, where in the last three years he has served in a variety of capacities, most recently as the interim Chief Information Officer and as the Chief Technology Officer, Portfolio, Planning & Policy.
He previously served as interim Deputy Chief Information Officer and as Chief Finance & Workforce Officer. In his time there, he oversaw 240 employees and a budget of approximately $60 million, with responsibility for all budget & HR matters and several high impact, enterprise-wide strategic initiatives including efforts to centralize IT staff and resources for the State of Alaska.
Prior to this he spent 5 years at the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education where he served as Quality Assurance Officer and Assistant Director of Program Operations where he was responsible for leading agency teams and priority initiatives including internal process improvement, regulatory and cyber security compliance, lean transformation, institutional authorization program review, and research and development initiatives. Additionally he worked as a Media Technology Coordinator for Governor Shawn Parnell and Special Assistant for Regulations and Citizen’s initiatives in the Lt. Governor’s Office, and has a little over two years’ experience as an Analyst/Programmer also within the State of Alaska.
Shier received his MPA and BS in Information Systems (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS). During his time as a student at UAS he was a Student Body Senator/Vice President and participated in several UA system-wide efforts.
