Phishing Alert | Email Subject: "warning!!!" | 16 Dec 2013


OIT has been receiving notices of a phishing email making it's way into people inboxes.  The email reports the user's account has been suspended and will be deleted if the account isn't "verified" in 5 days.


If you have received this message in your Google Apps @ UA email account, you can report the message as a phishing attempt using Google's Report Phishing tool.

If you received this message in any other email account, please delete the message.

The email asks the recipient to follow a link, and likely provide personally identifiable information.

DO NOT reply to this email or fillout the form.  If you did, you should immediately change your password using ELMO.

Phishing Indications

Here are a few of the things to look for when identifying this message as phishing:

  • The email address is not a University of Alaska address.
  • The URL (link) is not a University of Alaska address.
  • The email and webpage ask you to "verify" and "validate" your account. OIT does not need to verify or validate accounts.
  • The email elludes to impending doom if you don't act.
    "WARNING! Account owner, that refuses to update his/her account after five (5) days of receipt of the notification of this update, his/her account will be excluded permanently from our Database we will not be responsible for the loss of your account."

Always be cautious when emails or websites ask for personal information or passwords.
