NRM 161 - This course is designed for the student who aspire to be a backcountry guide or someone looking to develop their leadership and teaching skills in a wilderness setting. The course material will focus on technical skills such as equipment repair, shelter construction and navigation. Another major portion of the course will be soft skills, focusing on group development and management, Leave No Trace, and multiple intelligences. The instruction style will be very hands on and engaging. This will not be a 2-hour lecture on how-to walk in the woods, but rather a semester long experience that you will remember for years to come.

Details: The course will meet from 9:45 to 11:15 on Tuesday and Thursday. It will include two overnight field experiences and students will also co-lead a trip with Outdoor Adventures during the semester. The course fee of $160 covers all food, transportation, and equipment. Instructor permission is required for this course. Simply come by our office and talk to Mark Oldmixon. Join our office as an intern for 3 credits and assist with leading trips, managing the rental program, producing financial reports, advertising to the public, developing a web-site, repairing equipment. Spending a semester with us is a great way to learn more about the outdoor education and recreation field. This is a guaranteed learning experience, guaranteed fun and a great resume builder. What more can you ask for?

We will work with you and your advisor to get the internship approved and be valuable to your education and development. Most departments require their students to have a junior standing and 3.0 GPA to be approved for an internship.

This course takes students who have participated in NRM 161 and/or the Outdoor Adventures Internship program and further developes their backcountry leading skills. After 161 or the internship, you will be comfortable leading a backpacking or hiking trip, but NRM 361 introduces you to the art of leading a a more involved trip such as backpacking trip on the North-side of the Brooks Range  or Sea kayaking out of Seward on the Kenai Peninsula. We will spend a few days discussing advenced leadership theory and then take an extended trip to utilize a hands-on learning environment. EMS 152 - ETT First Responder: Wilderness

May 14 - 22

This 3-credit course could save your life and will make you feel more comfortable going into the backcountry with friends or as a professional. Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is an intense 9-day training that focuses on providing long-term first-aid care to an injured person in backcountry. When there is no road near by, no cell phone service and no way to call for help, this is the information you will want to know. WFR is becoming a national standard for outdoor professionals. We are privileged to have Deb Ajango as our instructor. With this course you receive a three-year certification as a WFR from Wilderness Medical Associates.  This is worth your time and money! The total walk away price is $643, including textbooks and certification.
