Ivan Veniaminov's Notes on the Unalashka District is now published for the first time in its entirety in English. This encyclopedic work deals with geography, geology, climate, plant and animal life, ethnography, languages and history of the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands. It is supplemented by an article on the Aleuts of Atkha district, compiled by Father Iakov Netsvetov, and a lengthy article on the culture and languages of the Koloshi (Tlingit), compiled by Veniaminov after his transfer to Sitka. Notes is required reading for anyone interested in the Russian presence in Alaska, or in the life of Veniaminov, who served as metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church and was later glorified (canonized) St. Innocent.
