2002-2017 Mary Hughes

Mary Hughes was born in Kodiak and raised in Anchorage. She graduated from the University of Alaska with  a BBA in Management in 1971 and earned her law degree from Willamette University College of Law in 1974. She joined the firm of Hughes, Thorsness, Gantz, Powell & Brudin that year and worked on a wide variety of commerical law matters such as public utilties (including telecommunications) and acquistions and mergers.

In the course of her legal career, Hughes has mediated many disputes and served as a hearing officer for the state. She served as Municipal Attorney in Anchorage from 1995 to 2000 and is currently a member of the board of trustees for the University of Alaska Foundation and Willamette University.

In 2002, then Governor Tony Knowles, Hughes was selected to serve on the University of Alaska's Board of Regents. She was then reappointed in 2009 by Governor Sarah Palin.
