Philosophy and Humanities The department offers a major and minor in philosophy, introductory philosophy courses, core curriculum classes in ethics (PHIL 322X) and humanities (HUM 201X), a broad range of upper and lower-division elective courses, cross-listed courses, and classes for graduate credit. The Philosophy Major at UAF The department has proposed the following revisions to the degree requirements for the major: completion of 30 credits in philosophy; one year of a non-English language; optional senior thesis and an oral defense for departmental honors. Students may also register for Independent Study coursework in philosophy under special arrangement with the department faculty. Program Objectives and Expected Outcomes - Objective: to provide students with a solid historical and comparative background in traditional philosophical disciplines and perspectives
- Objective: to assist students in their critical and creative engagement in the philosophical process, developing their own ideas and positions, and exploring the various implications of these ideas
The program offers students upper-level coursework in the various areas of philosophy, a course in formal logic, a foundation in the history of philosophy from ancient to contemporary, and an introduction to non-Western philosophy.
