John Hopkins, Head of the UAF Music Department, received his
Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from
The University of Iowa. In addition to teaching voice at the University of
Alaska Fairbanks, he directs the Choir of the North, the Alaska Camerata and
the UAF Opera Workshop. Dr. Hopkins has been active as a conductor, adjudicator
and clinician for Alaska and Northern Nevada/California regional music festivals.
He has conducted at the Northwest Regional Convention of the American Choral
Directors Association and has contributed articles to The Choral Journal and
Strings magazines. His arrangements of choral works by Irving Fine are published
by Boosey and Hawkes. Dr. Hopkins has been accepted three times as a Visiting
Scholar at Harvard University and has participated in summer programs at Westminster
Choir College, including performances with the Westminster Choir at the Mostly
Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center. Dr. Hopkins has appeared as baritone soloist
with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, the Arctic Chamber Orchestra and the
University Chorus. While at The University of Iowa, he performed various operatic,
oratorio and musical roles. Before graduate school, he sang for one year with
the chorus of the Hessiches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, Germany. During his
tour of military duty, he was a member of the U.S. Air Force Bands and directed
the Voices of S.A.C., the vocal show ensemble of the Strategic Air Command
Band at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. Dr. Hopkins has served as President
of the Alaska Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and Governor
of the Alaska Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
He has also served as Musical Director for productions of the Fairbanks Light
Opera Theatre. |
