Wind Symphony

Karen Gustafson, Director

The UAF Wind Symphony has a long tradition of performance on campus and on tour. In past years, the ensemble has performed under composer-conductor Karel Husa, and has played at the Northwest MENC Conference. Additionally, the group has performed throughout the state of Alaska. During the tenure of conductor James Bicigo, the Wind Symphony began an active outreach to area public schools - performing concerts, participating in rehearsal clinics, and holding an annual "instrument petting zoo." The ensemble performs frequently with the 9th Army Band. Literature performed recently has included Symphony for Band by Hindemith, Short Ride in a Fast Machine by John Adams, Emblems by Copland, Suite Francaise by Milhaud, and Folk Dances by Shostakovich.

In the fall of 2004, Ann Marie Musco was appointed conductor of the UAF Wind Symphony. Professor Musco looks forward to working with this talented group comprising music majors, nonmusic majors, and select community members. Currently the ensemble meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning at 4:40. If you are an experienced woodwind, brass, or percussion musician, consider joining the UAF Wind Symphony. We'd love to have you!
