Alaska Camerata

Organized in 1992, the Alaska Camerata is a small ensemble
composed of voice majors selected from the Choir of the North. The ensemble
was formed to challenge and train voice majors in choral and vocal techniques
to a degree not possible in the existing choral organization.
The group has delighted audiences with a wide variety of chamber choral works.
Repertoire for the Alaska Camerata has consisted not only of the expected
Renaissance and early Baroque madrigals but also of rarely heard works from
the Renaissance to the contemporary time. The group has performed many of
the works by William Byrd, as well as those of Claude Debussy, Francis Poulenc,
Paul Hindemith and Irving Fine.
In May 1998, the Alaska Camerata performed three concerts in Washington D.
C. as part of an "American Musical Salute" commemorating the 150th anniversary
of the Washington Monument. The ensemble presented works by American composers,
including colonial composers William Billings, Jeremiah Ingalls and Josiah
Flagg. Contemporary American composers represented were Gian Carlo Menotti,
Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland and Irving Fine. The Alaska Camerata has been
invited to participate in the Innsbruck International Choral Festival in June
2000. |
