Although we are somewhat isolated here in Alaska, understanding the role of trees and forests throughout the world is important and does impact our economy and national and international programs. My previous work with agroforestry systems in many countries throughout the tropics and sub-tropics has contributed to my desire to keep people in Alaska informed about international forestyr. Over the past 10 years, I have had the opportunity to work on several projects involving international forestry including work in Russia and in Indonesia.

What we have been doing

• Increasing awareness of international forestry Issues
• Maturation in Acacia crassicarpa: A research program to investigate maturation problems and solutions.
• Worked in eastern Russia on a sawmilling evaluation project
• Gave a presentation on agroforestry in developing countries to three classes of natural resources students
• Gave a presentation on forestry in Hawaii to a natural resources class preparing to go to Hawaii
• Worked with the Sun Grant program to develop a grant to address evaluation of forest-based fuels in islands of the South Pacific
• Gave a presentation at the Western Forest Genetics Association conference in June 2006 on condensed tannins in Leucaena
