Agriculture in the Far North
Agriculture and Horticulture in Alaska is distinct. Growers, farmers and
gardeners must contend with unpredictably short growing seasons, yearly
infestations of various insects, long daylight hours and even the occasional
mid-season frost. While consumers may have a difficult time finding informed
advice from the “outside,” local Extension Agriculture and
Horticulture Agents and Specialists are highly-trained professionals who
experience the same challenges as residents.
Helping Alaskans Grow Alaska
Agents work with farmers and recreational and commercial gardeners,
provide landscaping advice and promote sustainable living. Program specialists
focus on applied research by offering and reporting on scientific solutions to
clientele’s needs and problems around the state. Agents use
specialists’ reports, data and resources to deliver the information to
the local public in a non-formal manner which can include holding workshops
and farm forums, being “on-call” to answer consumer questions,
conducting community-based research, and pursuing and developing new
industry-related technologies. Don’t hesitate to contact your local
Extension agent with any question. |
