Mission and Objectives


Department Mission Statement

The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is:

To offer the highest quality, contemporary education at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to perform research appropriate to the technical needs of the State of Alaska, the nation and the world.



Educational Objectives

After completing our undergraduate program, our students will be able to:

  1. Compete successfully on the world stage at the professional level;
  2. Deal with the significant local, regional, national, & global issues facing humankind;
  3. Continue to develop as engineers through lifelong learning;
  4. Serve as resources of technical knowledge for the state as well as the nation, especially with respect to northern issues.


Educational Outcomes

Graduates from the mechanical engineering program at UAF must have:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs
  4. an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams
  5. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  6. an understanding of professional ethical responsibility
  7. an ability to communicate effectively
  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context
  9. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues
  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
  12. an appreciation of significant engineering issues in the north

The department insures that each course in the curriculum plays a meaningful role in satisfying one or more of these objectives.
