About 20 faculty conduct research directly through the Institute of Northern Engineering, independent of our research centers.
These faculty shape their research in response to defined state and national needs in combination with Alaska’s unique environments. These projects include developingvehicles suited for extreme terrain (DOD funding), air quality issues (EPA and Alaska Department of Health Services), energy management in small, remote systems (DOE), robotics (DOD), and various geotechnical engineering projects concerned with climate change and terrain stability, including pipeline and powerline feasibility studies (Alaska Railroad Corporation, US Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation, British Petroleum), and materials research on the nano-scale (Office of Naval Research, National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation).
In FY06, these researchers brought roughly $700,000 in new funding to UAF.
