Calculate Faculty & Staff Salary

INE Proposal Information

How to calculate salary for faculty & staff:

  1. Ask the INE Business Office or Proposal Office for an up-to-date hourly salary figure.
  2. Multiply this number by 173.33 hours. This will give you salary per month.
  3. Multiply by the number of months in your budget.
  4. Multiply this figure by the appropriate leave benefit percentage (see table below).

***Always include leave benefits with salary. This gives you the "loaded" salary.***

For example, 3 months of a faculty member's time might be:

    ($60/hr)(173.33hrs/mo)(3 mos)(1.017) = $31,728 in loaded salary

  5. Take the loaded salary and multiply it by the appropriate staff benefits rate (see table below).

    For example:

    ($31,728)(31.9%) = $10,121 in staff benefits.

**List this figure on the "fringe benefits" line of your budget.**

    An APT staff example:

    ($25.26/hr)(173.33hrs/mo)(6mos)(1.2200)=$32,049; staff benefits = ($31,708)(44.1%)=$14,134

    A Classified Staff example:

    ($20.21)(173.33hrs/mo)(.5 mos)(1.213)= $2,125; staff benefits = ($2,119)(57%)= $1,211

All staff salaries should increase by 3% each year.
All CEM faculty salaries should increase by 4.5% each year.
All graduate student salaries should increase by 3% each year.

Other numbers:

  • F&A rate for proposed projects beginning on or after 1 July 2007: 45.1%

  • F&A rate for proposed research projects funded by Alaska State agency dollars: 25%

  • F&A rate for proposed training projects funded by Alaska State agency dollars: 12%

How to calculate F&A:

  1. Add up all project direct costs (total direct costs, or TDC)

  2. From this total, subtract student tuition and health care costs, equipment costing $5,000 or more, and subcontract amounts that exceed $25,000 over the life of the project. The remaining amount is your modified total direct costs (MTDC).

  3. (MTDC)(45.1%) = F&A costs

  4. F&A Costs + TDC = Total Project Request

Rates of Pay for Postdocs hired in INE:

  • Postdocs from $40,000 to $49,000 August-May (from $19.23 to $23.56/hr)
