  • April 2008 - UAF Student Steven Kibler has won the IEEE NW Area Student Paper Contest held in Seattle on April 19 for his paper "Real Time Optoelectrical Visualization for the Optimization of Micromouse Hardware". Full Story...

  • February 2008 - The Alaska Microgravity Team was recently selected to participate in the 2008 Flight Campaign of NASA’s Reduced Gravity Student Flight Program. This is a team comprised of University of Alaska Fairbanks electrical and mechanical engineering students. The team will test the stability of small satellite attitude control systems (ACS). This will be accomplished by designing and constructing two control systems, one mechanical and one electromagnetic, then the students will evaluate the stability and accuracy of the systems in zero gravity.

The team has recently released a student video showing their latest experiences on this mission. To see this video, or find out more on the Alaska Microgravity Team, please visit their site here.

  • April 2007 - The UAF MicroMouse team won the IEEE North Area MicroMouse competition. A joint competition was held between the Region 6 NW Area (AK, WA, OR, part of ID) and the Region 6 NE Area (MT, UT, parts of ID and WY). A MicroMouse is a small autonomous robot that navigates a previously unseen maze to find it's way to the center square. The UAF team consisted of David Giessel, Steven Kibler and Devin Boyer, all ECE students. The UAF MicroMouse had the best score at the competition in Boise on April 14, 2007. The mouse was named "55 41 46 31" which is the ASCII hexadecimal code for "UAF1." The UAF MicroMouse home page can be accessed here.
  • September 2007 - The Vice Chancellor's office has announced an Undergraduate Research Competition open to UAF students. Proposals for the fall 2007 and/or spring 2008 semesters are due by 5pm October 3, 2007. Full Story...

  • May 2007 - Brendon Bruns, EE junior, representing UAF at the IEEE NW Area Student Paper Contest, placed 1st in the competition. His paper was titled: "Design of a High-Performance Hybrid-Electric Snowmachine." He received $500 for winning the Area competition. Brendon will go on to represent the NW Area (Alaska, Washington, Oregon and part of Idaho) down at the IEEE Region 6 (12 westernmost states) Student Paper Contest to be held in late August.

  • May 2006 - Recent ECE graduate Doug Campbell placed 3rd in the IEEE Region 6 Student Paper Contest, held in Manhattan Beach, California. Doug's paper was titled: "Common Misconceptions about Power and Energy in Electric Power Systems." We all congratulate Doug on a job well done representing UAF and the NW Area of Region 6.
