A great way to meet other people and spruce up your resume is to join one of the engineering student organizations and honor societies. Student organizations are a great place to meet fellow students, work on construction projects, or just to catch-up with friends and eat pizza.
The student chapter of the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) designs, plans, and constructs an ice arch every year, as well as a number of other activities each semester.
The AGC (Associated General Contractors) is also active and encourages all Civil Engineering students to join. Meetings are usually held biweekly. There is also a new chapter of SWE (Society of Women Engineers). They hold meetings bi-weekly, look for postings in the Duckering Halls.
There are also opportunities for students with top honors, both Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi invite students each semester to join. They are active both on campus and within in the community promoting engineering and volunteerism .
