PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • May 2005 to August 2006: Senior Staff Engineer, GeoSyntec Consultants, Oakland, CA.

    Involved in the bid process, analyses, design, and construction of various national and international large scale geotechnical projects. Participated in peer review projects and feasibility studies for a variety of geotechnical and geoenvironmental projects. Prepared geotechnical reports.

  • March 1999 to January 2000: Geotechnical Project Consultant,Bilyap Construction Co., Istanbul, Turkey.

    Co-founded and directed the geotechnical department of the company. Performed field investigations, created boring layouts and contracts. Performed drilling inspection and field classification of soil and rock. Designed slopes, and retaining walls. Prepared geotechnical assessment reports of residential areas in city of Istanbul after the 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake.

  • May 1996 to September 1997: Project Engineer,Geocons Engineering Co., Istanbul, Turkey.

    Worked on design and construction of retaining walls. Analyzed stability of slopes. Organized site working schedule, performed site inspection. Prepared geotechnical reports.


RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

  • August 2006 to Present: Assistant Professor, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, AK

    Conducting experimental research on liquefaction, soil improvement methods, and cold region geotechnical earthquake engineering. Currently managing a variety of research projects with a total budget of approximately $600,000.

  • January 2001 to May 2005: Graduate Research Assistant, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX

    Conducted experimental research on "pore pressure generation characteristics of liquefiable soils". Performed strain-controlled, undrained, cyclic simple shear and triaxial tests on sands and silty sands; pore pressure generation evaluated.

  • January 2000 to August 2000, Research Engineer Associate, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX

    Performed research on clogging of landfill drainage systems due to leachate. Developed a laboratory scale hydraulic conductivity testing system with data acquisition and graphics software.

  • August 1997 to August 1999, Graduate Student Researcher, Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey.

    Involved in various research projects: Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of the City of Adana; Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Assessment of Omerli Dam; Earthquake Damage Assessment for the 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake.

  • August 2006 to Present: Assistant Professor, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, AK.

    Teaching graduate and undergraduate level Civil Engineering courses. Courses taught: CE 334 Properties of Materials (Fall 2006), CE 627 Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (Spring 2007), CE 422 Foundation Engineering (Fall 2007).

    Responsible for preparation of lectures and grading of reports for soil mechanics laboratories.

  • August 1997 to August 1999: Teaching Assistant, Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey.
