The University of Alaska Fairbanks has been offering degrees in Civil Engineering since 1922. The CEE program now offers offers six masters programs and participates in UAF's Ph.D. in Engineering programs, along with the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program.

Our graduate programs provide an emphasis on traditional engineering problems along with engineering in higher latitudes. We offer students flexibility by integrating our programs with other units at UAF. We also encourage students and faculty to participate in the surrounding academic and social culture. We demonstrate to students, by example and practice, the importance of taking an immediate and active part in one's professional community.

Civil Engineering Graduate Programs

M.S., Civil Engineering
Students with a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering can pursue an advanced degree in one of the department specialties - Structures, Transportation, Water Resources, Environmental, or Geotechnical - or some combination of these fields, with permission from the student's graduate committee. This degree requires 30 credits beyond a B.S. Six to twelve of these may be thesis credits.

M.C.E., Civil Engineering
Similar to the M.S., this degree is designed for an engineer with broader professional interests; several civil engineering subjects may be combined. The student usually does not write a thesis, but completes an in-depth engineering project instead. Three to six credits are allowed for the project.

M.S., Arctic Engineering
This program is administered in cooperation with the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It is designed to provide graduate education for engineers who must deal with the unique problems of design, construction and operations in cold regions.

Environmental Engineering
This program is designed for engineers who will pursue careers in areas of water treatment, supply, and distribution; waste collection and treatment; water and air pollution; solid waste management; and environmental impact and evaluation.

Environmental Quality Science
This program is similar to the Environmental Engineering Program, except that it is tailored for students with a strong quantitive science background. Students with a B.S. or B. A. will have to meet certain mathematics and computer skills levels to enter this program.

Engineering and Science Management
The ESM program is designed for engineers who hold, or expect to hold, positions as managers in such technical organizations as engineering design consultants, construction companies, petroleum and other manufacturing and development industries, public agencies and military services. No thesis is required, but as a final course, the student must make an original study of a technical management problem and present a report of findings.

Structural Engineering --coming soon
This program is designed to provide a sound fundamental background for students wishing to receive a graduate degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in Structures from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The program serves to prepare students for the field of structural engineering at two levels: research or design.

Ph.D. In Engineering
UAF offers a Ph.D. in Engineering. This doctoral degree program draws on the combined strength of civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering departments at UAF. Doctoral research will usually focus on one of these engineering areas: Arctic, Civil, Electrical, Engineering Management, Environmental, or Mechanical. UAF also offers an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. that is available for scientists pursuing engineering-related research.

Graduate Research

Opportunities
Faculty teaching in CEE's graduate programs perform research through the Institute of Northern Engineering (INE). Department faculty are especially active in its Water and Environmental Research Center and Transportation Research Center. Annually, CEE faculty perform over one million dollars of research in laboratory, numerical evaluation, mathematical modeling, and field studies for a wide range of private, state and federal clientele. Looking for a specific research project or have an idea for research? Contact one of our faculty members.
