Public Involvement Abstract
The purpose of public involvement in construction projects is to
ensure that the project management makes informed and timely decisions
based on the needs of the public. When project management strives to
inform and involve the public, a sense of project legitimacy and
accountability is generated with the public. There are unique
challenges required to engage the public in rural Alaska. Rural village
communities that are not only physically isolated, but also have
cultural, language, and economic differences that vary from village to
village, compound the ordinary problems associated with public
involvement. This report polled major project owners, designers and
contractor in Alaska about their public involvement process in rural
Alaska. It analyzed the poll responses and wrote recommendations for
public involvement. An informational brochure and a checklist were
developed.
