Graduate Application Procedure

Finding an Advisor, Thesis Topic and Funding

On the one hand you should check out our website to find an advisor and a research topic. If you do not have sufficient financing on your own, e.g. through a scholarship, you will have to look for a teaching or research assistantship. These usually pay for 20 hours of work during the semesters and 40 hours of work during the summer time. Hourly wages are usually between $11.50 and $13.50 per hour depending on how advanced you are.

Write an email to the faculty members whose research areas interest you and ask them for which projects they are planning to hire research assistants. If you have very specific ideas what research you would like to pursue, try to find a supervisor with similar interests, it may be more difficult to get funding in that case though. It is highly recommended to already start with this before you come to UAF in order to obtain a funded position as a research or teaching assistant. You may also check out our website on SELECTING A THESIS TOPIC.

If you apply for the Ph.D. program, it is especially important to establish contact with faculty members at UAF because as part of you application package you need to submit a preliminary graduate study plan. Your future advisor will work with you to develop this graduate study plan.
