Alternate ways to earn UA credit
There are numerous ways to earn credit at UA without ever attending a class or stepping foot on campus. These alternative methods include:
Credit by exam
Did you know you can earn college credit by simply receiving a passing score on an exam? Credit by exam options include:
- ACT Proficiency Exam Program (ACT-PEP)
- ACT (English)
- SAT (Verbal)
- CEEB (College Board Advanced Placement)
- CLEP (College Level Exam Program)
- Dantes-DSST (Standardized Subject Tests) / USAFI Examinations
- Excelsior College Exam
- Foreign Language Testing (Credit for Language Testing)
- International Baccalaureate
- Local Credit by Exam
- National Credit by Exam
- NOCTI: National Occupational Competency Testing Inst Exam
There are several important things to note about receiving credit by exam. For example, credit by exam:
- Does not affect your GPA.
- Is not considered residence credit.
- Is not factored into the semester course load for classification as a full-time student.
- Is not available for all courses.
- May require payment of a fee.
Non-traditional learning activities
We recognize individuals learn a great deal outside of the university. At UA, these non-traditional learning activities can satisfy some of the program requirements for UA certificates, associate’s or bachelor’s degrees. Non-traditional learning activities include:
- ACE/PO NSI
- CPL: Credit for Prior Learning
- Business/Industry Credit
- Language Credit by Placement
- Military Credit
- Certificates: National, State & Local
- Tech Prep Programs
- Training Programs

Alternative learning options
In some cases, a person may want to pursue a college education – but is not able to attend traditional, on-campus classes. To accommodate these individuals, we are pleased to offer a number of alternative learning options. These include:
- Correspondence studies
- Directed studies
- Distance education
- Independent learning
- Independent study/individual study
- Internships/practica
- Learning Cooperative (UALC)
Credit transfer
If you have earned credits from other regionally accredited institutions or through military educational experiences, you can often “transfer” these credits to UA. Visiting UA’s transfer credit resource Web site at http://uaonline.alaska.edu can help you estimate how your credits may equate with specific course offerings at UA. After you have formally applied to UA and been admitted as a degree-seeking student, you may also obtain an official evaluation of transfer credits.
