University of Alaska partners with corporate, non-profit, and state agencies to achieve a shared goal of serving Alaska's students. Alaska's College Goal Sunday (CGS) is a premier example of successful collaboration between UA and other student-centered organizations. Alaska's CGS event will be delivered each February at various sites across the State to assist families with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The FAFSA is required to qualify for state and federal financial aid for higher education. The CGS program represents an exceptional opportunity to increase access to higher education for Alaskan students and families. This event will be provided by Coalition of Alaskans for Higher Education (CASHE), a joint effort by the Alaska Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education and UA. The event will be financially assisted by a three-year grant from the Lumina Foundation. CASHE will select a finite number of sites for 2005, and increase the coverage of the state and number of sites in grant years two and three. The UA Viewbook is another significant collaborative effort. UA works in concert with the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education and the Alaskan school districts to distribute a college planning viewbook to all Alaskan ninth-graders. The viewbook is a tool to assist students and their families in beginning the college planning and selection process. This project is part of a multi-stage effort to encourage students to consider college as a viable option. UA and UA partners know that education changes lives. Right now is a time of deliberate and concentrated outreach expansion to Alaskan students, both young and old, to consider decisions that can have a positive and lasting impact on their life. Collaborative efforts to bring college-planning information and activities to Alaskan students will continue to expand. |
