What should you say?
Talk about the impacts of the budget reductions. Tell them why UA is important to you and why it is important to the state. Talk about personal experiences that demonstrate the value of a program. Tell them what your future plans are and how the university will help you accomplish them. Let them know why you think the governor’s/House’s number is in the best interest of the state. You will only have a few minutes to state your case.
- Identify yourself by giving your name and affiliation and where you live.
- State why you are testifying.
- Pick two or three bullet points about the importance of the project/funding/impact.
- Then tell your own story!
- At the end of your testimony, be sure to thank the legislators for their time and ask for their continued support for the university.
We suggest that when contacting legislators regarding issues such as the budget you avoid using university email or other resources, and that you do so on your own time, such as lunch time or after work. The university's budget is not a partisan political issue or a ballot measure -- those issues are subject to very strict prohibitions or restrictions on use of state resources. However, your advocacy will have the greatest effect if it does not raise use of resource issues.

The State Capitol is equipped to stream committee meetings from all standing committee rooms. In addition, 360 North’s Gavel to Gavel service covers most major hearings held in the capital.
Committee documentation and minutes are accessible from the Committee Proceedings page of the legislature’s website (http://akleg.gov/#tab4). You will need to know the date of your hearing to locate it on the Committee Proceedings page.
Archived streams of prior meetings can be accessed from the Committee Proceedings page of the legislature’s website (http://akleg.gov/#tab4) or from 360 North’s Gavel Alaska archives (http://www.360north.org/gavel-archives/).
House and Senate floor sessions are available live and are archived at Gavel Alaska (http://www.360north.org/gavel-archives/).
