High-Demand Careers

Summary

•    Out of 3,500 degrees we award each year, 2,400 are in career areas deemed “high demand” by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

•    In the last nine years, UA has started more than 100 new degree and certificate programs directly responding to Alaska’s high-demand jobs. During this time we’ve doubled the number of nursing graduates, tripled the number of qualified allied health workers, and met the process technology workforce need.
•    Workforce development can and does include anything from a short course or certificate to a two-year degree, four-year degree, master’s or even Phd in some occupations.
•    Our budget request priorities are for the  high-demand areas, including health, engineering and construction management and fisheries.
•    UA has  63 percent of college-bound high school graduates choosing to attend UA, up from 44-45 percent 7 years ago.
•    The shortage of skilled workers in Alaska is certainly a concern, but this can be addressed by an investment in higher education and workforce training.
•    As President Hamilton often says, the University of Alaska offers our state one of the best “local hire” programs available.
