UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA
• The number of UA students graduating with degrees qualifying them to work in Alaska high demand jobs – such as nursing, allied health, behavioral health, engineering, computer networking, construction management and technology, and many others - is up more than 33 percent since FY99, with a 9 percent (200 degree) increase in the last year alone. The UA system is fully integrated in this effort, with more than half of these graduates using courses from several different campuses to meet degree requirements.
• The high demand job area with the most dramatic increase in number of degrees awarded since FY99 is Health. A total of 717 health related degrees were awarded in FY07 - a 66 percent increase fro FY99 - and a six percent increase over the FY06 level. One area of demonstrated success in the health programs is the doubling of Registered Nurse (RN) eligible graduates from the 2001 level.
• The high demand job area of engineering and construction also shows strong performance, with nearly 200 degrees and certificates awarded in FY07. This is an 18 percent increase from FY05 and a 34 percent from FY99, although a slight decrease from the FY06 record level. Currently, through the programs offered at UAA and UAF, 80 students can earn undergraduate degrees in engineering each year. With continuing State support, the university plans to grow UAA graduates to 90 students by FY12 and UAF graduates from the current 50 students to 110 students by FY12.
• Student demand for programs qualifying them to work in Alaska high demand jobs is significant. Annual fall semester enrollment in these programs has grown by 3,687 students, 41 percent, since FY00. Growth has moderated to 5, 7 and 3 percent in FY05, FY06 and FY07 respectively.
• The University continues to expand its revenue generating ability through sources such as federal funding and private giving and corporate grants. University generated revenue is up $179M, 90 percent, from the FY99 level. Growth has moderated from 20 percent in FY05 and 12 percent in FY06, to 4 percent in FY07.
• UA’s research enterprise is strong with annual grant-funded research expenditures growing by $38M over the last six years, a 44 percent increase.
• In FY07, UA received 313 new research grant awards in areas of importance to the state of Alaska in areas such as health/biomedical, climate change, resource development, fisheries and ocean science, logistics, geosciences and atmospheric sciences.
• Undergraduate retention for students in certificate, associate and baccalaureate programs is up 10 percentage points (an 18 percent increase) since FY99.
