Strategic Direction Update

                      Student Centered Focus”

In September, President Gamble will present the UA Board of Regents with the smallest proposed tuition increase in over a decade (2 percent) for approval for the Academic Year 2014 (fall 2013, spring 2014). The increase will apply to students on all 16 University of Alaska campuses. For more information on this story, please click here .

“How Does UA’s tuition rank regionally?”

According to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), The University of Alaska has one of the lowest tuition and fees rankings among the 15 public four-year institutions in the region.

Tuition and school fee increases were on the minds of students, parents, staff, and faculty during the Strategic Direction listening sessions conducted this past school year.

“What UA Students are saying about tuition and fee increases”

We have to take a look at tuition costs beyond a community level… the cost of tuition should be at a statewide level.

I would like to see good grades be rewarded through tuition incentives.

I would like to know more about available scholarships. I would like to see scholarships keep up with the rising cost of tuition.

There should be consideration for students who are losing Pell Grant and other financial aid opportunities. Labs and other fees are also inhibitors.

The tuition is fair , but the student fees have been increasing every year. What I save in tuition does not make up for the fees that continue to go up. I have never used the pool, and I don’t use the amenities for the majority of the fees I pay for. That’s unfair.

“What is your role in SDI?”

It is everyone’s role to be a part of Shaping Alaska’s future” and help make UA a better and stronger University in the 21st century. Be proactive, ask questions of your department manager, your dean, or anyone in a leadership role and find out how you can get involved.
