Strategic Direction Update
The Strategic Direction team met with University Statewide staff last week. The team also conducted listening sessions with Statewide Administration Assembly, Staff Alliance, and Faculty Alliance. The University of Alaska Anchorage held its Strategic Direction listening sessions for staff, faculty, students and alumni Monday, April 2.
Last week the Strategic Direction team conducted a listening session with University of Alaska Statewide staff in both Anchorage and Fairbanks. Here are some of the comments that came out of those listening sessions:
- There is no doubt that hiring and retaining the very best staff boils down to benefits. Many highly qualified people want to work here because of health benefits and tuition waiver opportunities.
- If the University wants to keep quality staff, there needs to be some kind of performance system in place that allows them to grow. We used to have the step program that rewarded motivated staff based on performance. That’s gone. There needs to be some performance-based strategy to replace that program.
- The only way we’re going to break down the barriers that exist between Statewide and the three universities is to begin talking to each other about what’s in the best interest of the students. Without students there are no campuses and there is no statewide system. Redundant systems that don’t talk to one another are not student friendly.
- In order for us (staff) to do a better job in the workplace, we need to commit to training our people on a continual basis.
