People of UA 2014

Introducing Karen Ramsey

I work at the University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan campus where I am the primary point of contact at the business/student services office. In my position, my duties vary widely. I handle campus communications, student inquiries, act as cashier, and help manage local scholarships. In my student-services related work, I assist not only students taking academic courses but also those seeking to enhance their careers through vocational course offerings. I love my job and am happy to spend 40 hours a week with some of the most delightful coworkers (both faculty and staff) I’ve ever been blessed with.

FUTURE
I will soon celebrate my 8-year work anniversary with the UAS Ketchikan campus, where I also earned my BLA degree. On weekends I recharge by kicking back with my husband, spending time in the garden or out on our boat fishing. I plan to continue working for the University of Alaska for several more years, representing UAS Ketchikan in as friendly and efficient a manner as possible.

SHAPING
Of the Shaping Alaska’s Future initiative themes, the one that most closely resonates with me is Theme 3: Productive Partnerships with Public Entities and Private Industries.

UAS Ketchikan collaborates with entities such as the Alaska Marine Highway System, Vigor Industrial, Southeast Alaska Regional Resource Center, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District, Ketchikan Medical Center and the Totem Heritage Center, among other entities. Such partnerships allow UAS to offer a well-rounded selection of both academic and vocational courses.

In the spring 2014 semester, for example, our campus offered: marine transportation courses to the public; courses varying from Applied Math for Trades to basic electrical systems for Vigor employees; continuing education courses for teachers; GED prep courses and testing for SERRC; a Certified Nursing Assistant course that required clinical hours at Ketchikan Medical Center; and college credit for Northwest Coast Native Art classes held at the Totem Heritage Center.
