Consider Teaching

You may want to consider pursuing a teaching degree. If so it is recommended that you Contact an education specialist at a local college or university for more information on becoming a teacher.

You may not be employed as a teacher in Alaska's public schools unless you have a valid Alaska teacher certificate. Visit the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (EED) for more information on Alaska Teacher Certification requirements. Explore your options
If you do not currently meet the requirements of NCLB, and want to continue to work as a paraprofessional in Alaska you have three options that will meet the requirements of NCLB.
Select options #1, OR #2, OR #3 for more information.
#1.
Complete a minimum of 48 credits (equivalent of two years of study) at an institution of higher education.
#2.
Obtain an associates degree or higher at an institution of higher education.
#3.
Meet a “rigorous standard of quality” AND demonstrate through the Alaska State Assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing.

Degree Programs
AA
An Associates of Arts degree is a two year degree (roughly 60 credits) that will: meet the requirements of NCLB and is most likely transferable to a baccalaureate degree program, should you decide later to purse a four year degree.
AAS
An Associates of Applied Science degree is a two year degree (roughly 60 to 65 credits) that focuses on a specific area of knowledge. An AAS degree, in most cases, will: meet the requirements of NCLB, BUT may not always transfer to a baccalaureate degree. Check with an advisor for more information.
Cert.
A Certificate is a one year program (roughly 30-36 credits) that as a stand alone program will NOT meet the requirements of NCLB or transfer to a baccalaureate degree program; a minimum of 48 credits (semester hours) must be completed to meet the state requirement for NCLB.
