Carla Beam is vice president for university relations for the University of Alaska (UA) system and president of the University of Alaska Foundation.  

In her university relations role, she is responsible for statewide public affairs, federal and state government relations and overall advancement for the UA system which includes three separately-accredited universities (University of Alaska Anchorage, University of Alaska Fairbanks and University of Alaska Southeast). Her foundation duties include serving as the primary link with the organization’s trustees and helping to set long-term direction. 

Beam has an extensive resume in corporate, nonprofit and community-based public relations. Prior to joining the University of Alaska, she worked in community and external affairs for BP (Exploration) Alaska. She has also owned and operated a public relations consulting firm and managed public relations for a regional airline.

Beam’s volunteer leadership includes a long list of Alaska organizations: the Alaska Community Foundation, the University of Alaska Foundation, United Way, the Anchorage YWCA and the YMCA, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters, to name a few. She is a member of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Athena Society and the YWCA Empowerment Circle. 

Beam has received a number of awards for her service. These include the University of Alaska Meritorious Service award, the YWCA’s Outstanding Woman in Philanthropy recognition and Woman of Achievement award, the United Way of Anchorage Tocqueville Society Community Service award, and the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Gold Pan for Community Service.  

Beam received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Reed College in Portland, Oregon.
