Kate Ripley came to the university as public affairs director in November 2004. Prior to that, she had 15 years of professional experience in journalism, strategic communications, public relations and marketing. 

Ripley is responsible for UA’s statewide strategic communications, media relations, branding and publications. She oversees UA’s award-winning statewide advertising campaign, which received a national Best of Show award from the 23rd Annual Admissions Advertising Awards for 2008. The campaign won national gold and silver medals in the 2007 Council for the Advancement and Support of Education competition.

As a journalist, she was a recipient of the national Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism (Annie E. Casey Foundation/University of Maryland College of Journalism) for a three-part newspaper series on daycare and working families, as well as numerous regional and state journalism awards. She edited the third edition of “Best Places Alaska,” published by Sasquatch Books, and contributed to “Our Alaska--Personal Stories about Life in the North,” published by Epicenter Press.

Ripley was born and raised in Juneau and is an eighth-generation Alaskan of Russian and Aleut heritage. She is a member of the Public Relations Society of America, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, Alaska Press Club, Society of Professional Journalists and Rotary Club of Fairbanks. She also serves on the City of Fairbanks’ Clay Street Cemetery Commission.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Montana and a master's degree in Northern Studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
