Born and raised in Munich, Germany, Hildegard Sellner, immigrated to the U.S. in 1995. A first-generation university graduate and a non-native speaker of English, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from Montana State University-Billings in 1998 and earned her Master of Arts (2001) and Ph.D. (2005) in German Literature at the University of Oregon. She relocated to Juneau in 2005 and started working in the Learning Center in 2006. In 2008, she stepped into the role of director. In this role, she oversees the tutoring operations in writing and mathematics, testing services, and the Learning Center’s general academic support functions.

Sellner holds a translator’s degree from a German institution (1986); she was certified as a translator (English to German) through the American Translators Association in 1998, and she still occasionally freelances as a translator and interpreter. She taught all levels of undergraduate German courses at Montana State University-Billings and the University of Oregon from 1996 – 2005, and served as a tutor in organic chemistry, German and Spanish at Montana State University (1996-1999). Conceptual approaches and experiential practices of healing on the biological, psychological and institutional/societal level are close to her heart.
