Former Alaska State Trooper colonel and acting Alaska public safety commissioner Keith Mallard this week joined the University of Alaska Fairbanks Police Department as its new chief.

Mallard, a 19-year law enforcement veteran, replaces Sean McGee, who retired last spring.

Prior to his October 2013 appointment as acting commissioner, Mallard spent more than 16 years with the Alaska State Troopers. His first assignment was in Fairbanks, where he served as a member of the Special Emergency Response Team, as a handler for trooper canine Nissan and as a field training officer. His career with the troopers took him to Aniak, where he and two other troopers served 21 villages; and to the Anchorage area, where he rose through the ranks and was active in the troopers’ canine unit, serving as both a coordinator and instructor in the program. He also served as deputy commander and then commander of the Alaska Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Enforcement. Prior to his time with the troopers, Mallard served as a municipal police officer and a deputy sheriff.

Mallard is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations’ National Academy, the National Executive Institute and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Drug Unit Commanders’ Academy.
